Our Safeguarding Policy
This policy applies to all staff, including coaches and volunteers and anyone working on behalf of Safe Haven Basketball Club.
The purpose of this policy: To protect children and young people who are in receipt of coaching from Safe Haven. To provide staff and volunteers with an overarching policy which guides our approach for safeguarding and child protection
Safe Haven believes that a child or young person should never experience abuse of any kind. We have a responsibility to promote the welfare of all children and young people and to keep them safe. We will practice in an environment that protects them.
Safe Haven Basketball undertakes to comply in full with the safeguarding policies of Basketball England, details of which can be found at

Athlete Behaviour Guidelines
You must respect your coach and fellow players at all times. This incudes:
- Following safety instructions
- Listening to and respecting the preferences of other players
- Respecting the personal space of others and not making others feel uncomfortable
Please speak to your coach who will support you to understand and follow these guidelines.
Code of Practice for Coaches
Through our code of practice we will keep children and young people safe.
Coaches must respect and champion the rights of every individual to participate in sport.
Prevention of Potential Safeguarding Issues
All coaches will require an enhanced DBS check and provide at least two appropriate references.
Volunteers will be asked to undergo a DBS check unless vouched for by a trusted organisation as part of a volunteering programme run by that organisation. They will at all times be supervised by the coach during sessions, and will not be required to run sessions unsupported at any time.
Safe Haven recognises that disabled children and young people are particularly vulnerable to abuse and the club will not tolerate discrimination or prejudice.
Taking Appropriate Action
Coaches and volunteers must always take immediate action and report any concerns regarding the potential abuse of a child. If a member; coach, volunteer or child, discloses information about potential abuse, immediate action must be taken and reported to the Club Welfare Officer.
It is not the role of a coach or volunteer to investigate any child protection or safeguarding issues and it must be reported to the club welfare officer or deputy welfare officer. They will then report it to the appropriate organisation: Basketball England, Child Protection in Sport Unit or the Emergency Services as appropriate.
It is important to record all safeguarding concerns, and this can be done through the completion of the Incident Report Form. The Club Welfare Officer will complete the form and ask you to sign and date it to signify that it reflects accurately the reported concerns. If this process is not completed in a timely way or to your satisfaction you can report directly to safeguarding@basketballengland.co.uk or to the emergency services.
For further information on how to handle concerns, or if you have any questions about the Safe Haven safeguarding policy please talk to the Club Welfare Officer. You can also visit the Basketball England website to find out more on safeguarding@basketballengland.co.uk

Photography Policy
Safe Haven Basketball records images in the form of photographs and videos of young people playing basketball. The reasons for this include:
-
For publicity to promote basketball and the club.
-
Record/provide mementos of significant events for the club and children and their parent/guardians.
-
For analysis of coach and player performance as a coaching aid.
The club is committed to providing a safe environment for young people to participate in basketball and so has adopted the following good practice guidelines:
Publishing Images
-
Through the use of a consent form, we will ask for the permission of children and their parents/guardian to take and use their image.
-
All photographs will focus on the activity rather than a particular child.
-
If an image is used, we will not name the player.
-
We will never publish personal details (email addresses, telephone numbers, addresses etc) of a child.
-
We will only authorise the use of images of players in a suitable dress (tracksuit, on court clothing i.e. vests/shorts, off-court clothing).
